This course provides an overview of a strength-based approach to understanding problematic behaviors of children in out of home care, including recognizing behaviors as communication efforts and functional adaptations to a child’s self-perceived difficulties. Staff will also receive basic training in regards to developing a working communication and counseling skills, and working as a team in the provision of services to children in out of home care. In particular, staff will receive and overview of basic communication standards and skills, including appropriate use of humor, active and reflective listening techniques, how to give direction, and avoidance of triggering client crises with inappropriate communication. Additionally, staff will receive an introduction to the collaborative-problem solving paradigm for use in crisis prevention and intervention with emotionally disturbed children in out of home care.
